- Break it into small pieces
- Sprinkle or lightly spray water over it (don’t soak it all at once)
- Knead it thoroughly
- Wrap it in plastic or put it in an airtight container and let it sit for a few hours, then knead again

If it’s very hard but not fully cured:
- Crush or cut it into small chunks
- Add small amounts of water gradually
- Seal it in a container overnight so moisture spreads evenly
- Knead the next day until smooth
If it’s completely dried/cured:
- You can’t really soften it back to workable clay
- At that point, it’s better to use it as a solid piece or start fresh
